Portland: tell PGE that Forest Park is not for sale!
Last May the Portland City Council voted 12-0 to deny PGE’s application to log 4.7 acres of Forest Park to upgrade power lines. They unanimously rejected PGE’s application agreeing with a City staff report, Forest Park Conservancy (FPC), and Forest Park Neighborhood Association (FPNA) testimony that the project violates the Forest Park Natural Resource Management Plan–long-standing public policy that protects Forest Park from non-park related development, requiring adherence to strict land-use criteria designed to project this important public resource.
Native plants now available locally!
It’s been hard for local gardeners to find native plants for their gardens, because all the native nurseries are far away. Vi Nguyen and her husband Jimmy offer a solution. “I started thinking about how difficult it can be to find a good selection of native plants on the west side. And when you do find them, they can be pretty expensive. With the cost of just about everything going up, I wanted to make native plants more accessible and affordable locally. Native plants help restore local habitat, support pollinators, and thrive in Pacific Northwest conditions with less water and maintenance.”

Local students raise and release salmon!
Jennifer Klingner is a fifth-grade teacher at Bonny Slope Elementary (BSE). When we first learned about the “Fish Eggs to Fry” project, she agreed to answer our questions. She began by saying, “This is actually a large unit that covers so many of our standards that it is challenging to describe. The salmon eggs and their release are really a culmination of lots of different parts coming together.”

CMCC raising funds to replant trees
We were all shocked and saddened when we saw the devastation to our beautiful, forested parks, in addition to the damage to peoples’ homes and yards. Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation Department (THPRD) crews worked hard to remove hazard trees and clear trails like the one in the Bluffs Park leading to Bonny Slope Elementary.
One of our neighbors suggested that we might want to help THPRD in the replanting effort that will take place this fall. We reached out to THPRD to make sure we could do this and were given a go-ahead. Funds can be deposited to the Cedar Mill Community Club (CMCC) account at Sunset Credit Union, or you can donate here with our GoFundMe project. Funds will be held until plans are in place for renovating the natural areas.
