creo chocolates

Creo Chocolate, the family-owned craft chocolate company founded in Portland in 2014, opened its first location outside Portland at Cedar Hills Crossing in September. The Cedar Hills shop is Creo’s fourth location and the first the family has opened outside central Portland. The Beaverton storefront features a case full of truffles, various chocolate covered products, and seasonal goodies.

Creo is run by father and son Tim and Kevin Straub, who partner with a single-family farm in Ecuador to produce their chocolate. The beans come directly from the farmers at Hacienda Victoria to their Portland factory. The process to turn the beans into their award-winning chocolate takes three days of work. They welcome the public into their Chocolate Lab for Build-a-Bar experiences to learn more about the process.

“We started [Creo] with a raspberry farm in Ridgefield, WA. While running the farm, we started making chocolate for family and friends, and things got a little out of control. Next thing you know, we’re opening up our fourth chocolate shop.” says Kevin Straub.

AoPS Academy is opening its newest location soon, providing an enrichment program for grades 1–12, with after-school and weekend classes in math, language arts, and science for highly-motivated students. Students develop their creativity, critical thinking, and complex problem-solving skills with outstanding peers and mentors. The program has been meeting on the Catlin Gabel campus. The company has campuses all over the US. Learn more here.

Since the article in the February 2017 Cedar Mill News we have expanded into a beautiful new space in Bethany Village and we now have a team of approximately 22 employees.

Our new spa features private infrared sauna rooms with showers, advanced facials and HydraFacial treatments, body treatments, spa rituals, and what we believe is Portland’s only adjoining-room massage suite. The suite consists of two private treatment rooms connected by a large sliding doorway, allowing couples, friends, and family members to enjoy massages together while retaining the comfort of their own rooms.

We have also been honored with the 2025 Best of the Rose City Gold Award for Best Day Spa, along with Silver Awards for Massage and Women-Owned Business.

The building on the NW corner of West Union and 185th has been home to several restaurants over the years. The Rock Creek Tavern closed a few years ago and The Mad Greek Deli took over. It had formerly been at the SE corner of the same intersection.

Now the owners are closing the business on November 28. Owner Jake Marks says the building has been sold and economic pressures “have made it impossible to continue.” The downtown location will stay open.

Your pelvic floor may be trying to tell you something. Bladder leakage and urgency are incredibly common—but that doesn’t mean you simply have to live with them. Whether changes began after having children, with age, or you’ve noticed leaking when you laugh, sneeze, exercise or simply can’t make it to the bathroom as easily as you once could, your pelvic floor may need some attention.

Emsella is a completely non-invasive pelvic floor treatment for women and men that uses HIFEM technology to create thousands of powerful pelvic floor muscle contractions in a single 28-minute session—all while you remain comfortably seated and fully clothed.

To celebrate the launch of Emsella at Grace, we’ve extended our introductory pricing for the Cedar Mill community. Curious if Emsella is right for you? Schedule a complimentary, private consultation with Michelle to talk about your concerns and create a personalized plan.

keyboard with key that says "deep fake"

What is a deepfake? It’s an artificial intelligence (AI) generated or manipulated video, audio recording, or image that realistically mimics a real person’s appearance or voice to make it look or sound like they did or said something they never actually did. One way a criminal uses a deepfake is to clone voices or video calls to impersonate company officials or family members to authorize financial transfers or steal data. The quality of these deepfake videos or phone calls has become even more convincing with the development of generative AI, which is technology that creates new text, image, music, videos or code when a person types a request (think ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, etc).

At Sunset Credit Union, we are always on the lookout for deepfake phone calls, which is why we will verify your identity through a series of questions that only the real you will know the answers to. Not all AI is used for fraudulent purposes, however as it becomes a more integral part of our lives, we need to learn how to tell the real from the (deep)fake.

Here are some things to look for to spot a deepfake: Lighting and shadows: Do the shadows and reflections match a single light source, like the sun or a room lamp? AI often misplaces shadows on faces, hair, or glasses; Blinking and eyes: Watch how the person blinks for unnatural patterns—either too fast, too regular, or completely missing; Skin and edges: Look at the edges where a face meets the neck, hair, or background, is it blurry, flickering or is there a sudden change in skin tone?; Teeth and mouth: Do the teeth look blurry or lack individual outlines? Lip movements may also drift out of sync with the audio (think old, dubbed movies)’ Voice quality: Listen for a flat vocal tone or lack of inflection, robotic sound, or missing breath noises between sentences, does it sound like the normal rhythm of human speech?; Manufactured urgency: Be extremely cautious if a video or audio call tries to rush you into sending money or sharing passwords. No financial institution will ask you for your credit card number or PIN; Real-time tests: On live video calls, ask the person to wave their hand in front of their face or turn their head sideways to see if the AI glitches.

As always, if you are unsure about a message you receive, go directly to the source of the call, email or video via a trusted phone number or website to verify the information before taking action. Legitimate sources expect to be verified.
