Mariachi Opera Premiere
Friday, July 24, 6-8 pm, Shute Park in Hillsboro, Free

Join Opera in the Park Portland for the world’s first mariachi opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna! (To Cross the Face of the Moon!) This performance brings you a full orchestra, chorus, seven featured soloists, and two actors—around 100 artists on stage.
Presented in both Spanish and English, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna tells a poignant and timely story of migration, cultural identity, and generational divides within the Mexican American community. The story begins in present-day Texas where an elderly Laurentino Valesquez lies in his bed, on the brink of death. In conversation with his adult son, we learn that Laurentino left a wife and child in Mexico when he immigrated to the USA in search of opportunity. The borders of time and space blur as we meet three generations of the Valesquez family, and come to understand their journeys, physical and spiritual.
Delicious food from Mexican vendors and activities with Hillsboro Parks and Recreation will be available before the show. To learn more, visit Opera in the Park.
Events at The Reser
Chamber Music Northwest Presents: Crossing Borders: Brahms Piano Quartet
Thursday, July 9, 7:30 pm, The Reser, 12625 SW Crescent St, Beaverton, $10-$77
Few things in our fractured world bring us together quite like music, connecting us with our shared humanity across borders and time. Premiered by Clara Schumann in 1861 and famous for its fiery “Rondo alla Zingarese” finale, Brahms’s youthful and exuberant Piano Quartet in G Minor transports us to both a young Brahms and to Hungary with its folk inspiration. Two soaring solo works by Austrian American composer Fritz Kreisler magically take us to Vienna in the hands of virtuoso violinist and CMNW Protégé Alumnus Claire Wells. This program even spans the mightiest oceans with a new CMNW-commissioned premiere by Donghoon Shin, whose music encompasses influences of both his Korean heritage and his London home. Don’t miss this U.S. premiere featuring renowned mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano.

Featured 2D: James (Jim) Syfert
“My primary focus is Plein Air; however, I also do studio work, primarily still life, as I prefer to paint from life, not photos. I paint with palette knives but do also use brushes to provide a different texture. Most of my work is done ‘alla prima’ (in one sitting), with a rare piece done over several sessions.”

Featured 3D: Hannah Gulick
Hannah has dabbled in various artistic pursuits for many years, most recently working in glass. She has made projects for various classes, learning as well as teaching, and exploring many techniques. She is always looking for new skills to practice and add to her repertoire.

Big and Bold: Garineh Baghdasarian
“This painting was inspired by my appreciation for the game of chess, and how it can be an interesting reflection of the real world. Every day we have different choices to make (different moves to make) and each choice can lead us towards a different outcome (towards winning or losing). Sometimes we don’t know what move to make. Other times, we calculate a perfect step by step plan in our head, but then outside factors bring obstacles and take us on a detour.”
