January was Financial Wellness month but working toward a place of financial wellness should be an ongoing project. This month we’ll talk about the second principle of financial wellness which is insurance. Having enough insurance protects you from the financial consequences of a catastrophic event, whether it’s illness, accident or another unforeseen occurrence.

Most experts agree that these core types of insurance are the minimum required in a solid financial wellness plan: Health Insurance for you and your family. Without this coverage a single illness or accident can lead to bankruptcy. This is widely considered the most important policy to have to protect your assets.

Life Insurance: do you have people who depend on your income? If so, consider a good life insurance plan that can provide, at a minimum, ten times your annual salary. Review the differences between term life and whole life insurance and choose the one that best suits your needs.

Long-Term Disability Insurance: this protects your ability to work. Should you become injured or suffer an illness that makes you unable to work, this insurance replaces a portion of your salary (usually 60-70%).

Auto Insurance: this insurance is required by law in most states, including Oregon, and it protects you from the financial burden of vehicle costs, medical expenses and legal liability in the event of an accident. Discuss your needs, the status of your vehicle (own outright or still paying off a loan), who you will be transporting (your kids? other people’s kids?) with an insurance agent. They can help you select the best policy for you based on deductibles and coverage amounts.

Homeowner’s or Renters Insurance: this insurance protects your home and property from theft, fire, or natural disasters. Mortgage lenders require homeowner’s insurance, and most landlords require renter’s insurance. Save some money by bundling home and auto insurance together. If you can purchase more insurance products through the same company, it usually saves some money.

There are other optional insurance products that you can add to your financial wellness plan that further protect your assets. If the premiums can fit into your budget, consider umbrella insurance, which provides extra liability coverage above your home and auto limits; long-term care insurance for future assisted living needs; identity theft protection to cover costs associated with recovering your identity; or pet insurance to offset the health costs of your most valuable family member. Once you have decided on your insurance plans and coverage level, review them each year and adjust coverage as your needs change.
