We are thrilled to continue our Power of Produce Youth Program, running activities every Saturday for children aged 3-11, to teach about produce and farmers market power!

We take SNAP/EBT at the market and with our Double Up Food Bucks program we can match up to $20 a day of SNAP currency!

However, we cannot run the market alone. We would be thrilled if you came to volunteer with us! Learn more and fill out the volunteering form at our website, Volunteer at CMFM.

Come on down to the market rain or shine! We cannot wait to see you!

The former Jim & Patty’s Coffee in Forest Heights, 2021 NW Miller Rd., has been rebranded as Spielman Bagels, according to Paul Ceserani, who has owned the company since 2019. Spielman Coffee was founded in 2011 by Rick Spielman and his son Raf on Southeast Division Street. The “Portland-style” boiled bagels soon became their man draw. The Forest Heights shop retains many items from the Jim & Patty’s menu and continues to operate Jim & Patty’s DoorDash. The original owners of Jim & Patty’s retired and this was the only location that retained the name.

If your family is searching for a preschool, please visit us! We would be heart-warmed to welcome you and your child into our dedicated early learning community. Classrooms are open every Wednesday with teachers and the director available to answer questions.

My name is Gracie Chumbley and as an A Child’s Way alumna and now PreK teacher, I feel honored to pass down the very values and curriculum that I was taught as a student. The developmentally appropriate, hands-on, play-based curriculum is a gift to your child for years to come. The philosophy gifts your child a lifelong love of learning that nurtures them throughout their educational journey. My memories of A Child’s Way continue to shape and inspire my worldview as an individual and educator. I am so thankful for my time at A Child’s Way. The photo shows me as a student with ACW founding members, Elaine Winans and Sarah Harris, then as a staff member with Elaine, who just celebrated her 88th birthday!

A Child’s Way is a non-profit, nationally accredited early learning program with no religious affiliation. Visit our website, achildsway.com or contact us at 503-644-8407.

This month we’re revisiting our series on Financial Wellness. We discussed the first two components of financial wellness in previous articles: make a spending plan and get insured. Another important component of financial wellness: manage credit and debt. Credit refers to the extension of borrowing privileges from one individual or financial institution to another. This generally involves assessment and verification of one’s creditworthiness. Various factors are involved, such as previous payment history, income and credit score.

Debt is a financial obligation that must be repaid: mortgages, car loans, credit cards, etc. Specifically, management of your credit and debt means strategically controlling borrowed money to minimize interest costs and building a positive credit history through responsible borrowing. It involves budgeting, making on-time payments, and keeping low credit utilization to maintain financial health, avoid bankruptcy, and secure favorable loan terms.

Strategies to help manage debt include: pay off high-interest debt or smallest balances first; consolidate debt by combining high interest debt to a lower interest loan; negotiate with creditors to see if they will take a lower payment; and seek financial counseling. Strategies to help manage credit include: make payments on time; limit new credit; and monitor/freeze credit. Avoid common mistakes such as paying only the minimum payment or maxing out available credit. Interest is like rabbits; it multiplies very quickly.

A way to maximize your savings is with a Money Market account. These accounts are savings accounts that typically offer a higher interest rate than the traditional savings account. A minimum balance will be required to earn the higher savings rate, however, unlike a CD, you can access your money easily in the event you need to use it. For more information about the Sunset Money Market account, see our website at sunsetcu.com or stop by the branch.
