Cedar Mill Cider Festival September 21

cider festival participants making cider

Our homegrown community event returns, with history, live music, fresh cider, food, vendors and community groups, and fun for all ages.

The main event is the cider pressing, where you can see how pioneers made cider, and sample the delicious fresh pressed juice for free. Market of Choice donates the apples, and scouts from Troop 208 run the press.

Thompson Road planning continues

The next round of upgrades for Thompson Road, from Saltzman to Marcotte, is still in the design phase, but in October Washington County will begin to purchase the necessary Right of Way (ROW) from landowners along the route. The main focus is to add a center turn lane, bike lanes, and sidewalks. Improved storm drains, signage, and street lighting will also be part of the project.

County museum and collections future still uncertain

The items and documents that tell the story of Washington County have been collected over the years and, since 1982, were kept at a building on the campus of Portland Community College, Rock Creek Campus (PCC). In January we learned that the latest group to manage this heritage had failed to obtain the funding necessary to keep it open.

Meet Your Neighbor: How a Calligraphy Teacher is Bringing the Community Together

As a child in South Korea, Jisook Kim discovered her lifelong passion for calligraphy, a handwriting style that expresses art through characters and symbols. She continued to pursue this passion in college, where she majored in graphic design and took classes on fonts in handwriting. However, this passion slowly faded away as she took in more responsibilities as a mother and a wife—until the pandemic. When the world was put on lockdown, she used her free time to take online calligraphy classes.

Celebrating 75 Years in Cedar Mill!

Leppert house

This summer marked a heartfelt milestone in Cedar Mill history: the 75th anniversary of a cherished family home that has stood as a hearth of warmth, tradition, and togetherness since 1950.

Nestled across the street from Cedar Mill Elementary School, the house was built by Ralph Leppert and his then 17-year-old son, Arnie Leppert. Hammer in hand, young Arnie helped raise the walls that would hold generations of laughter and love. Now, in a beautiful twist of time, Arnie celebrates his 90th birthday this year—an occasion that adds even more meaning to the home’s anniversary.
