Pulling Secrets From Paper: The Art of Marbling
Through December 31, Hillsboro Brookwood Library, 2850 NE Brookwood Parkway, Reception Thursday, December 4, 3-4:30 pm
Beaverton artist Liz Walker’s exhibit “Pulling Secrets From Paper: The Art of Marbling” showcases the ancient (and historically secret) art of marbled papers with a modern twist: the marbled papers have been turned into finished paintings.
Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design which can produce patterns similar to smooth marble or other stone. The patterns are the result of color floated on a viscous solution known as size, and combed with a stylus or rake before being carefully transferred to an absorbent surface, such as paper or canvas. Part of its appeal is that each print is a unique monotype. Liz has found a way to use marbling as an integral part of her painting technique. She seeks out unusual patterns and color combinations that are pleasing to the eye and imposes her subject matter (using acrylic paint and line work) onto the patterned paper (or canvas). What lies beneath the painting is the mysterious marbled pattern—only a fraction of which can be seen.
Classical guitarist Tye Austin strums at Symphony Coffeehouse

Every Friday-Sunday, now-March 31, 10 am-1pm, 16155 NW Cornell Rd., #500, free
Come to Symphony Coffeehouse to witness a world-class virtuoso perform relaxing classical guitar music and learn why Beethoven once famously said, “The guitar is like a miniature symphonic orchestra in itself.” Inspired by J.S. Bach’s weekly performances at his local cafe in Germany, Tye established this exclusive music residency in an effort to bring the performing arts into everyday spaces.
Tye will perform three sets (50 minutes each) per day, featuring traditional classical guitar repertoire, North & South American jazz standards, holiday hits, and original compositions. He will also sing a variety of popular songs in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. His music can be described as a cross between the Spanish guitar legend, Andres Segovia, and the boss of Bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim. Guests are encouraged to actively listen to the music while quietly conversing with each other.
We are proud to serve Thornton Coffee and various drinks and feature an eclectic food menu of gourmet meals, pastries, and snacks. Bring your family and friends! We look forward to serving you a delicious meal or drink, accompanied by beautiful melodies in a cozy atmosphere!
